October is often referred to as the Season of the Witch for reasons deeply rooted in cultural, historical, and seasonal contexts:
Samhain and Halloween: October culminates in Samhain (October 31), a festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It is believed that during this time, the veil between the physical world and the spirit realm is thinnest, allowing for easier communication with ancestors and spirits. This association with the supernatural contributes to the idea of witches being more active during this season
Autumn's Energy: The energy of autumn invites introspection, mystery, and transformation. As nature begins to die back, it symbolises endings and new beginnings. This reflective time aligns with witchcraft practices that focus on inner work, rituals, and connecting with one’s intuition
Cultural Revival: There has been a resurgence of interest in witchcraft and pagan practices in recent years. Many people are embracing witchcraft as a form of self-empowerment and spirituality, especially during October when themes of magic and mystery are prevalent in popular culture
Celebration of Nature: October’s changing leaves and harvest celebrations resonate with witches' connections to nature. This season encourages rituals that honour the earth’s cycles, making it a fitting time for witches to celebrate their practices
Media Influence: The portrayal of witches in media—especially around Halloween aka ‘Spooky Season’—has contributed to the idea of October as their season. Movies, books, and social media have popularised witchcraft themes, leading to a cultural fascination with witches during this time
How Do You Know You’re a Witch?
Some people believe you have to be born a witch to be able to do witchcraft. My inner knowing says all humans have this ability but that there may be a genetic component that makes certain people more predisposed toward magic. The main clue that you’re a witch is always going to be an interest in magic and witchcraft—It’s there for a reason!

Here are 13 tips for beginner witches:
1. Start with research. Learn about the basics of witchcraft, including history, protection, divination, spell construction, and different magical traditions.
2. Develop a consistent personal practice. Establish a regular routine of meditation, energy work, or other magical activities. Meditation is the foundation of pretty much everything you do. There are many different types of meditation so find one you enjoy and feel compelled to stick with.
3. Create a Book of Shadows, Grimoire or magical journal to record your learnings and experiences.
4. Practice grounding and centring techniques regularly.
5. Learn basic protection and shielding methods. Why is this so important? Because when you start practising magic, you draw the attention of spirits and not all spirits have your best interests at heart.
6. Explore different divination tools like tarot, pendulums, or runes to find what resonates with you.
7. Start with simple spells and rituals before attempting more complex workings. Also, bear in mind that you can keep it simple for the rest of your life. Simple doesn’t mean less effective. Practitioners tend to fall into one of two categories: Less is More and More is More. I’m a ‘Less is More’ kinda witch and intend to keep it that way.
8. Connect with nature. Spend time outdoors and work with natural elements in your practice. Mama Nature is EVERYTHING to a witch. She is your power and primary source of strength and protection.
9. Trust your intuition. Listen to your inner guidance. ← Read that again.
10. Be open to learning from many sources, but think critically about the information you encounter.
11. Adapt your practice to your environment and resources. Use what you have available.
12. Don't feel pressured to practice every day. Find a rhythm that works for you.
13. Remember that your craft is personal. There's no one ‘right’ way to be a witch. Make your practice uniquely yours. You also don’t have to try to label yourself or your practice. A witch is a witch is a witch and there are no limits to what they can do unless they limit themselves and box themselves in with labels.
