Have you ever tried setting a one-word intention for the year ahead? I’ve done it a couple of times but it’s been about seven years since I last tried it so I feel ready to give it another shot. Below you will find an outline for how one might pick a focus word for the year ahead. However, that’s not how I did it. If you scroll down, I’ll tell you about the approach I chose this year…

Setting a one-word intention for the year can be a powerful way to guide your thoughts, actions, and goals. By distilling your aspirations into a single word, you create a clear focus that can help shape your daily decisions and bring you closer to your desired outcomes. When choosing your one-word intention, consider the following steps:
Reflect on your values: Take some time to reflect on what truly matters to you. What values do you hold dear? What do you want to prioritise in the year ahead? Identifying your core values will help you choose a word that aligns with your authentic self.
Define your goals: Consider what you hope to achieve in various areas of your life, such as career, relationships, health, and personal growth. Think about the overarching theme that connects these goals. This theme can become your one-word intention.
Simplify and clarify: Once you have a list of potential words, narrow it down to one that encapsulates your aspirations and resonates with you on a deep level. Choose a word that feels inspiring, empowering, and meaningful to you personally.
Embrace versatility: Although your one-word intention is concise, it doesn't have to limit you. The chosen word should be broad enough to allow for exploration and growth. It should serve as a reminder of your overall direction without imposing rigid boundaries.
Keep it visible: Write down your chosen word and display it somewhere prominent – on your desk, as a screensaver, or even as a piece of jewellery. This visual reminder will help you stay focused and connected to your intention throughout the year.
Psalmic Divination
As some of you know, I have become enamoured with Psalm Magic this year. It’s by far the most practical and powerful magic I have worked. I’m currently working my way through the Psalms as a form of Hermetic initiation but I also use the Psalms as and when I need them for more specific things.
So this year, I decided to divine a psalm for the year ahead to be my go-to Psalm. I used the random number generator on random.org for this and got Psalm 147. Then I used the random number generator again to refine the focus to first a verse and then a word that I can use for contemplation.
Would you believe that I got the word ‘God’? And would you believe that I find that this word does not trigger me anymore? This is how I know I have recovered from Religious Trauma.
The other wonderfully weird thing about this way of divining the year ahead for me is that the word ravens occurs in Psalm 147. Ravens are only mentioned in a handful of places in the Bible.
“He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry.”
Psalm 147:9
